Sport Coaching BSc (Hons)

You will study core disciplines including coaching pedagogy, physiology, biomechanics and psychology, alongside broader themes such as health promotion, equality in sport and youth development. Practical learning is central, with access to Victoria University’s Human Performance Lab, Indoor Sports Hall, Strength and Conditioning Suite and 3G pitch, all located close to your seminar rooms and support staff. Learning extends beyond lectures through seminars, study weeks and work-based projects led by experienced coaches and educators. Personalised academic support and mentoring are embedded throughout, helping you develop a clear professional identity and confident approach to practice.

How will I be assessed?
How will I be assessed

Assessment is designed to reflect the realities of coaching, teaching and sport development. You will be assessed through a range of methods including presentations, coaching observations, written reports, reflective portfolios and research projects. These approaches allow you to apply theory to real-world scenarios, develop inclusive strategies for supporting learning and performance, and build a clear professional identity. There are no high-stakes exams. Instead, you will receive regular feedback and personalised support to help you grow as a capable, reflective and industry-ready practitioner.

Explore the Science Behind Coaching and Athlete Development

You will explore key themes across sport coaching and exercise science, including training adaptation, injury prevention, nutrition and mental wellbeing. Through practical workshops, collaborative projects and applied research, you will investigate real-world challenges and develop inclusive approaches to athlete development and performance support. You will also examine professional frameworks such as safeguarding, coaching ethics and health promotion strategy, gaining a clear understanding of how sport coaching is delivered in practice. While the course does not include a formal placement year, work-related learning is embedded throughout, helping you prepare for roles in coaching, consultancy, health support or performance analysis.

"• A-Level: Grade profile of BBC or 112 UCAS Tariff Points.
• BTEC: Grade profile of DMM. This can be achieved from either an Extended National Diploma or a combination of smaller BTEC qualifications.
• T-levels: A T-level with an overall Merit grade.

If English is not your first language, you must have the following IELTS score:
· Foundation courses: A Secure English Language Test equivalent to IELTS 5.5 IELTS with a minimum of 5.5 in each component.
· Undergraduate courses: A Secure English Language Test equivalent to IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component.

Course fees

The tuition fee for academic year 2026/27 is: £9,790. Tuition fees for courses starting April to May 2026, fall within the 2025/26 academic cycle.

Introductions to Sport & Exercise Psychology
20 Credits (Compulsory)

This module offers students an opportunity to be introduced to contemporary and fundamental concepts within sport and exercise psychology. Students will consider the underpinnings of human psychology and how this influences participation and engagement in various physical activity contexts.

Introduction to Sport & Exercise Biomechanics
20 Credits (Compulsory)

This module aims to develop knowledge of anatomy and function of the musculo-skeletal system during movement and apply them to exercise performance and injury. Students will also be introduced to biomechanical principles underpinning the practical analysis of human movement, considering the role of analysis in sport and in movement. It will serve to widen the students’ knowledge base and will provide a firm basis for working at a higher level in the discipline of sport and exercise biomechanics. Relevant risk assessment and health and safety protocols will be adhered to within the human performance laboratory.

Introduction to Exercise Physiology
20 Credits (Compulsory)

This module aims to develop knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, systems and their responses to exercise both acute and chronic from a physiological perspective. You will learn about human anatomy, function, systems in relation to both performance and health. This will include applied work in a laboratory environment to develop proficiency in measurements methods related to exercise physiology.

Introduction to Strength and Conditioning
20 Credits (Compulsory)

The module looks to develop students understanding and knowledge of key training principles that underpin physical preparation for training and injury prevention. Students will develop the theory and practical skills to apply training principles to healthy individuals.

Exploring Sport, Exercise and Physical Activity
20 Credits (Compulsory)

This module is focuses on exploring sport, exercise, physical activity and coaching. Introducing and developing the skills you need to be successful in Higher Education. The module will allow you the opportunity to reflect on your skills and development needs, as well as enhancing your knowledge and skills in this area.

Pedagogy of Physical Education and Coaching
20 Credits (Compulsory)

This module will introduce key pedagogical theories and concepts related to Physical Education and sports coaching. Students will have the opportunity to discuss the role of Physical Education teachers and sports coaches. Throughout the module, there will be opportunities to apply theoretical constructs to practical situations.
